Part Two: The Answer to the BIG question:
How to choose a wedding photographer?
Ultimately, the best Wedding Photographer has ALL the skills of a great Portrait, Fine Art, and Commercial photographer rolled into one Charismatic and Charming package. The best wedding photographer in the world is also one of the best photographers in the world. The best wedding photographers take an interest in their medium, having received the best training possible, either through colleges and universities or having done work experience with the most successful contemporary practitioners.
Portrait Photography. A great portrait photographer has the ability to create a friendly working relationship within moments of meeting people they have never met before and unlikely to meet again. They create an instant and natural sense of intimacy. A great portrait photographer is perceived by total strangers as having a certain warmth, or charm, that makes subjects want to perform well for them, to achieve the often difficult task of creating a photographic representation that is real, natural, and not fake. An average skilled portrait photographer allows the photographic world to turn without adding any spice to the recipe, recording what he/she sees, no matter how dull, whereas the exceptional portrait photographer uses their strength of character to captivate a subject that most often is afraid of being photographed. A great portrait photographer gives his subject the strength to be photographed and he knows how to control the situation.
Commercial Photography. Commercial photography trains the photographer to adapt to most working environments. Actual working technique is rarely learned in Universities because they teach photography from a purely theoretical point of view. Commercial working technique must be learned from the experts; those photographers whose jobs need them to be in control and be able to handle sudden changes in light, temperature, weather and of course personalities. The commercial photographer has the ability to photograph people both indoors and outdoors with equal success and has the right equipment to use to accomplish the best result. Fashion magazine photographers are expertly trained to cope with anything. If they can deal with fashion clients and moody models, real people are a treat.
Fine Art photography. All true photographers do photography because it is the medium that they have grown to love from a young age. The camera, once placed into the curious hands of a child, often becomes an addiction, and completely legal. It is rare that wedding photographers become successful without the basic knowledge of the Fine Art of photography. All that theory we studied in University forms the basis of our visual integrity. It is this visual integrity that follows the true photographer through all the paces of their professional lives and separates the girls from the ladies. A great fine art photographer always looks for interesting visual and conceptual solutions to the puzzles placed in front of them and the combination of the skills taken from Portraiture, Commercial and Fine Art photography contribute to the rock-solid base of all great wedding photographers.
